Assistance from Saltland Genie

Saltland Genie brings a little ‘magic’ to the process of making sure those searching for saltland information get connected painlessly to the right information for their particular situation and information needs. For researchers and students, Saltland Genie offers help with the following;

  1. Navigating around all the information that is available on this web-site;
  2. Showing where to start if exploring general information about dryland salinity (Unit Selector), and then helping you continue your exploration;
  3. Genie Search in response to key words or phrases;
  4. Connecting with (other) technical experts through a discussion forum;
  5. Linking to dozens of farmer stories about saltland, either by region, or by the farmer’s type of saltland solution;
  6. Comparing the relative advantages of different saltland solutions across a wide range of criteria, from cost to amenity value (Compare Engine).
  7. Accessing the detailed supporting information (research reports, printed products, web-sites etc) for those who need to explore not only the conclusions, but the research results that underpin them.

Saltland Genie provides researchers and student with ready access to the latest information that has been synthesised from all the research undertaken to date, as well as direct access to the relevant research reports.

Access to synthesised information

It is now possible for anyone to easily access the best and most up-to-date information about understanding and managing dryland salinity in Australia. All the information from the SGSL (Sustainable Grazing on Saline Lands) initiative has been reviewed and synthesised into this web site. The SGSL information was gathered by farmers, extension agents and researchers (from state government departments, CSIRO and universities) at more than 100 saline sites across southern Australia between 2002 and 2007.

To assist students, researchers and other users, this website has synthesised all available information in an accessible format. There are 7 ‘Units’ of general saltland information that summarise all the issues relating to dryland salinity, its causes, impacts and how it might be profitably and sustainably managed:

  1. What’s in it for me
  2. Saltland basics
  3. Can I trust the technology?
  4. Plant and animal performance
  5. Sheep, cattle and conservation
  6. Do the $$$s stack up?
  7. The saltland toolbox

Saltland Genie can help you explore this general information about dryland salinity.

Access to the saltland solutions

While all the general information about saltland in Australia has been synthesised into 7 Units, this section gives presents specific information about the 11 saltland solutions that are available for the rehabilitation of saline land. These saltland solutions have been compiled to assist farmers, advisors, catchment managers and researchers/students to understand how different solutions align with different site conditions. The 11 saltland solutions are:

Saltland Genie can help you explore the solutions, farmer experience with them, and the research results that underpin them.

Links to the supporting research reports

While the synthesised material in the 7 units of general saltland information and in the 11 specific saltland solutions will be of interest to everyone involved in understanding saltland systems, for researchers and students, the real value probably lies in the supporting material.

Wherever possible, there are links within all the information packages directly to the underlying research reports to allow those interested in the detailed results to go directly to the original sources.
